Hiccups!

Post by Cool_Breeze on Sun 25 Oct 2009, 19:05

Hi

Just wondering if anyone has any idea why Cool Breeze keeps getting hiccups? She's had them every day since we got her (just over a week ago), at first it was really cute, well it still is but I'm thinking it can't be very nice for her.

If we knew what the trigger might be we could help her, or is it just one of those things she'll grow out of?

Any ideas/advice appreciated

Megan

She eats James Wellbeloved Turkey & Rice puppy kibble, drinks water.

As for eating fast, I don't think she does - she eats a bit, walks around, eats a bit more, walks around, etc. Actually, we mostly struggle to get her to eat all of her food within an hour.

The hiccups don't seem to follow a routine, she had them 3 times yesterday poor thing!

Joker does the same, he has hiccups everyday...
Doesnt really look like its bothering him any, but I'll ask the vet when I go to see him this week anyway.

But I guess its not harmfull.. we have them too.. its just annoying for the moment we have them.

Try scaring him!!
(No, I'm just joking)

Haha at scaring her. Glad to hear she's not the only one that suffers with them and that she should grow out of it.

Just feel sorry for her lol, at least humans have cures - wish I could teach her my proven cure for them

Thanks for the help!

Re: Hiccups!

Post by suzieT on Mon 26 Oct 2009, 10:07

Poor pup - I think they could be that she may bolt her food / water down - hiccups normally occur when they release gas from their stomachs as a result of this - or it could be muscle contractions from their diaphragm spasms - quite normal in pups

Have you stopping her whilst eating - let her eat a little take away - give her a few seconds - then give her it back etc etc

It may just allow her to slow down and hopefully prevent the hiccups in the meantime if it is bothering you - worth a try I guess xx

Hope it works for you - Suzie T Smile

Trouble is.....

As soon as they stop with the Hiccups....
They start with the Belching !

Slightly off topic... But does anyone else have a disgusting dog?
As soon as he has eaten or drunk, Bronx walks up to you..
looks you in the eye, and Belches like a trooper.

Maybe he is just telling me he enjoyed his dinner.

Lol, I think I'd laugh my head off if Cool Breeze did that, she's very much a little lady at the moment (well minus the random disgusting bottom burps she does!)

Thanks again for the suggestions/experiences

But he only have those in the evening, when he is calm and sleeping on my feet...

Re: Hiccups!

Post by Stumpy69 on Mon 02 Nov 2009, 19:12

Every pup I've had has suffered with hiccups, some worse then others.

My better half has developed a way to stop them due to our Male having them so bad as he was growing.

She holds the pup under the front legs laying the pup back against her chest so the pup is basically lying from her neck down across her chest. This gently stretches the pup out and releases any constriction in the pups belly, if the hiccups are really bad she gently strokes their belly downward. Its seems to do the trick after a few minutes.

I think some pups get it much worse then others and it seems to be worse when pup are having growth spurts.

Hi Stumpy

Thank you loads for that, I will try it tomorrow - Cool Breeze is still getting them 3 to 4 times a day! Though she seems to be growing very fast (even tho the wii doesn't think so!), she's getting heavy to carry around for a long time now - roll on 2nd set of jabs!

Re: Hiccups!

Post by barney's mom on Tue 03 Nov 2009, 03:19

Oh boy - poor thing! Barney went through a time of getting hiccups fairly regularly. (by the way, Markey - no - no one has a disgusting dog... certainly not my sweet little flowery Barney who never burps in my face.... right!)

The funny thing about Barney's hiccups is that he didn't actually make the hiccup sound. But his body - you could tell he had the hiccups. Oh, it was so sad to watch him! After a few weeks it simply went away as mysteriously as it came. When he did have the hiccups, it was not associated with a recent meal or drinking, so we never figured out what was the trigger.

Cheers I'm glad it helped, we describe this to any of our new puppy owners in their puppy packs or show them how to do it when they come to pick their pup up. Some of the little buggers suffer from it so badly the poor little mites. :-bd

Sami is also having hiccups quite often, usually after he's been over excited. Had even more (once or twice a day!) when he was smaller. (Now 5 months.)
