Bronx does it too.. unless he knows you really mean it.
They just answer back if they think you are playing.
You have to put on an act that you REALLY mean it.
Unless they have been a real pain, and you are p*ssed with them.. then no acting is required

Re: help please with the crazy puppy

Post by suzieT on Mon 09 Nov 2009, 12:59

Hi

This is entirely normal but although Star is only 9 weeks you must let her know that this behaviour is not allowed.

Please do not misinterprut my email I am just trying to give you good positive advice which should stop Star behaving this way. It is much easier now then when she gets older.

This is not agression - but it cannot be allowed to continue Smile x

So here goes :-

What Star is basically doing is disagreeing with you for telling her off - so you must be consistent - in fact all the family need to be consistent.

You say you son is frightened of it and you must protect your child and let Star know he is part of your pack and she is not allowed to do this - so reinforce the NO and GOT TO YOUR MAT/ BED for example and give Star time out -

As she is only 9 weeks old her time out will last about 2 secs as their attention span is about 5 seconds lol

Each time she disagrees with you - say NO firmly and mean it - then walk a little toward Star and say GO TO YOUR MAT

This is going to take alot of reputition due to her age - but perservere and you should stop Star from acting this way.

Hope this info helps you and I also hope this doesn't come across as patronising - it isn't meant too

Best of Luck - Star is an absolute Beaut in that pic with your Rottie Smile

fret not......my girl was and still is a complete loon.....and at 9 weeks she was at her absolute worse. i think this was because she ahd grown in confidance and was feeling settled in in the house. her energy levels were soaring but she still cound't go out for walks.

being able to walk them makes a huge diffrence, just remeber not to much to begin with.

as every one has said befor be consistent and firm and you get there in the end. i also find every day is diffrent, some days harley is an angel and so good and calm and the next day she turns into a complete gremlin.

She is just being a puppy and pushing her luck, just continue with the firm no when she behaves in this way, , when she does this I would give her time out in another room, just for a short time and ignore her, she will soon learn that any unwanted behaviour results in her being ignored, I would also at this stage discourage any rough and tumble behaviour wih your 6 year old, do you intend to take her to a training class ???

she has pedigree puppy food (in the yellow tins) bits of chicken and pedigree puppy treats the vet recommended.
was told not to use puppy class's but to look for socialisation classes as puppy classes dont have older dogs an she needs 2 mix with all ages.

Hello, what a cute pup star is!

I have found with all mine that yelling "NO" doesnt work at all. The best thing I found is to stand firm & still (like you are angry) & quietly in a deep voice say "NOOO". If she continues being naughty time out is fab. But only for a few mins at her age.

With her food, I'm sorry to say that i do not like pedigree tin food. (or many tin foods for that matter.) It's full of additives they dont need & It "could" be making her hypo!
Maybe try a good kibble for a bit & see if that helps her.

She will get better, she's just a pup trying to work out how she is allowed to behave.

Yes I took cassie to a training class and not just a puppy one where she had to mix when we arrived with older dogs too and then we split off into puppy and older dogs classes, it worked well for her good luck

And I agree about the food too, contact the different companies and ask for samples or go to pets at home if you have one as well and ask for samples thne you can find one that your puppy likes, cassie was on royal canin as a puppy but what one likes another doesnt

That's terrible! & all because a puppy staff is full of life I expect! Most are like a "go kart with legs". Shame, isn't that why we love them so much? Hope they are back soon so they don't miss out on playing with a staffy!

I love the go kart with legs bit!! All staffie pups are quite full on aren't they? All 3 of ours have been stronger characters when younger!! They still are now actually! They are like naughty kids till they learn that firm 'sit' then they all sit there looking like you've just pinched their teddy (not that ours have any left, they ate them all!!)
