Crying at night

Crying at night
Missy does not like it at night time. We have only had here 3 days and she is very young (8wks). When we go to bed we put here it her bed in the kitchen with her toys, food/water etc. As soon as she wakes up ( 10 mins or so) she stands at the stair gate and starts crying and gets louder and louder. People I have spoken to have said that i need to ignore her and she will stop after afew nights. Are they right??? Or is she to young to be on her own at night?
I dont want her to go through too much too soon as she was with her sister and parents afew days ago, now shes in a new house with new people. As soon as she is picked up she is happy and will sleep in my arms. But i don't want her to get in this routine!

Re: Crying at night
If you want her to sleep in her crate you have to leave her. Whenever you go and pick her up your reinforce that she gets atention for crying and you will set this as the routine. Tough love on this unfortunately.

Re: Crying at night
We got Jasper last Saturday and he cried really badly at first when he was on his own in his crate, it broke my heart to hear him but I stuck to the advice given and ignored him. He still crys a bit in a morning when he wakes up but he is getting better every day. BE STRONG IT'S THE ONLY WAY!!!!

Re: Crying at night
I dont have a crate. She has the whole kitchen to herself with a safety gate at the door, would she be happier if she was in a crate and had her own little space?

Re: Crying at night
We always put our pups in the crate at night, a room can be awfully big for a little pup. It might not stop the crying, you do have to get past this as advised by being tough about it.
I think maybe a crate is safer too. There a couple of other things you could try like leaving a radio on for her, or a ticking clock and a safe soft toy to snuggle up to.
They do grow out of it but is a bit hard when they are so new and little to ignore it!!! There's loads of good stuff in the puppy questions area of the forum. I had a few dogs in my life but I still learnt a bit from reading others questions.

Re: Crying at night
You may find she feels more secure in a crate and in the long run if you she is crate trained it can make it easier if she becomes destructive.
I would buy a 36" one so it lasts and you can section half of it off until she is bigger. If you make it nice and comfortable with a bed and a few toys she will feel secure, we also cover our cage at night.
I do beleive that it will also help (most puppies) with toilet training as nost do not like to go where they sleep.
As for the crying stick it out

Re: Crying at night
Thankyou to everyone who gave advise. Lastnight we left her to cry in the kitchen, after 30mins she stopped and slept all through the night. She did wake up once during the night and have quick cry for a minute, but a big improvement. She hadn't tried to destroy anything and had done her number 2's on her training pad! She was sitting in the washing basket lokking at me when i came downstairs this morning tho. lol

Re: Crying at night
Awww - sat in the wash basket -
Missy did very well last night x
It is heartbreaking when your pup cries - as you want to go and comfort them - but if you have put her out to toilet before bed time then she is crying for comfort which you can't give in it as hard as it maybe
If you are unhappy with the kitchen arrangement you could try placing the crate upstairs and then gradually move it further away from the bedroom as she becames more settled. However if you are happy with the kitchen then don't change anything xx
Crates can make pup feel safer but it won't stop them crying - it is something they have to go through.
You could try placing an old jumper in her crate so it reminds her of a familiar scent.
Hope your pup settles doen soon - it really doesn't take long for them to settle
Where did you get Missy - she is adorable xx

Re: Crying at night
The kitchen arangement suits us at the moment, we will have to see how she gets on over the next few days. We got here locally (isle of wight), we fell in love with her straight away. We met both of the parents while we were there to, the dad was a lovely big brindle lad who wanted all the attention lol. The mum was just as lovely but not as bothered about being fussed over.
