My little mongrel Caesar

Post by My Bully's Keeper on Wed 01 Apr 2009, 17:23

He was a great little dog, which my Dad rescued from the streets. He used to come into my Dad's little shop all the time for food and company. It took a week or so of this for my Dad to bring him home. My Mam never wanted a dog, I was 11 at the time and I always wanted one but was never allowed. So when Caesar came I was thrilled but my Mam was still unsure. He had a dodgy paw, looked like it had been broken at some point and the vet said he was around 1-2 years old, he was scrawny and took a wee while to trust us. I thought he was going to grow into a big strapping German Shepherd (hence his butch name!) but he stayed the same size, a little Heinz 57 lol. First night he was in the garage, second in the kitchen, third he slept anywhere he wanted. He was house trained and so obedient. He was fairly aloof all his life to be honest. Never a needy dog and just got on with his own thing, but when it thundered or when he felt uncertain he's scramble on the sofa for a cuddle. As I got older he became more my Dad's dog, he'd walk him for miles and to the beach and buy him iced-cream at the beach lol.

When I was 20 my mother died and we thought we'd get a pup to accompany Caesar, we bought Prince a pure bred GSD, he loved Caesar but Caesar was too old and grumpy to put up with a young pup. Caesar's demise came quick after we bought Prince, he collapsed three times on his walks and we took him to the best vet we could find. They X-rayed him and said his heart had enlarged and was pushing on his wind-pipe. I remember talking to the vet who was lovely, she explained she could prolong his life but she'd be keeping him alive for our sakes not his. He was 14 and I had to make the decision. I was 21 and my Dad couldn't come, he was too upset so I said for the vet to PTS.

She gave me 5 minutes with him and I just held him in my arms, he knew what was happening I'm sure of it. I went outside after saying farewell to my little man and cried all the way home. Prince was 9 months or so by then and I'm sure he knew too Caesar was gone forever. All in all, he had a great life and was adored by everyone especially me and my Dad. I don't think any dog will every come close to him to me.

Here's a picture of him when he put some weight on and about 6 months after living with us. Smile

Thanks, I'm sure Caesar had a great life with us and I'm still happy twenty odd years later we gave him the life such a great little dog deserved.

Thanks for all the kind comments about my little mutt.

When I look back, he was never wormed, flee'd or anything, went to the vet once in his life. He was such a healthy little lad Smile

Thanks Tracy. He'll always be my favourite dog no matter what. It's just such a shame there's so many 'Caesars' in this world who need a good home.
