we had some really good years from our english cleo who came from a rescue centre as well they have such a lovely nature
i am not sure if i have any photos of her as it was way before digital cameras were about laughing

The “New Bull Terrier” first appeared in its present form at a Birmingham show in May 1862. It was shown by James Hinks, a dog dealer, who is generally accepted as the original breeder of the Bull Terrier, whose family has being associated with Bull Terriers until the present day.
Hinks would no doubt have used many breeds and types of dog in his quest to breed his "Gentleman’s Companion", but it seems likely that the Bulldog, the (now extinct) English White Terrier, and the Dalmatian. were the main contributors. His preference was for a white animal and it seems that the dog fancy of that time were in agreement, as his "White Cavalier" quickly gained popularity, and was successful at the early dog shows which were rapidly becoming popular at that time.

The “New Bull Terrier” gained in popularity and in 1887, after several attempts, The Bull Terrier Club was formed. At this time the breed consisted mainly of white specimens, the coloured generally being of a different type. Shortly after the 20th Century commenced, determined and successful efforts were made to breed coloured Bull Terriers, today the coloured and white are one breed.

The children of white parents are always white, although these can and often do, have head markings; the offspring of a white+coloured parent can be white and/or coloured. The prime colours consist of brindle, red and tri-colour (black, white & tan and black, tan & white) with various shades between these.

By Selective breeding the Bull Terrier has today developed into a companion animal and much loved family pet. He is extremely affectionate with people, and is particularly noted for a fondness towards young children.
Nevertheless he is a strong and powerful animal, and it should always be remembered that he is a first and foremost a Terrier with a competitive spirit and may not always be tolerant of other animals, though many live together in a household quite happily with other pets.

Temperament
Though they are not ideal for a first-time dog owner, because of their power and difficulty to train, their physical strength is matched by their intelligence, which makes them thoroughly reliable pets. Both body and mind need to be kept active and they can be fun and playful. They are typically very affectionate dogs that love human company. Bull Terriers are particularly good with children, and usually have a high pain threshold, which reduces the risk of injury to children from a defensive bite. Younger dogs, however, may regard children as playmates and because of their strength could cause inadvertent injury. They are protective of children in their charge, and the females are especially noted for this. Bull Terriers make formidable guard dogs while their owners are away. The English bull terrier is a great family dog as they are calm and relaxed but will play and become very active when played with they are very lovable and should be great with children when socialized at a early age.

personally to me they are ideal for the 1st time dog owner as pip was my first dog away from home and i couldnt have wished for a better more loyal dog she was much easier to train than buffy but pip was very laid back
IMO they are totally different to the staffy but ive only ever had one and as for the guard dog well all i can say is if my purse was under her and someone tried pinch it they could easily move her take my purse and then put her back lol

i grew up with bull terriers and only got a staff because my other half wanted one and i personally think they compliment each other and cant imagine not having either in my home

i dont know if they are rare but ive never seen one lol however there is beautiful sandy coloured one that we have seen at our local booty and hes the only one ive seen that colour maybe i just look for the onles that look like my pippa lol
