Worried about Harley

Post by My Bully's Keeper on Mon 02 Nov 2009, 14:23

He's not eating, his tail looks like it's superglued between his legs and he's looking so fed up.

Never seen him this bad before, when he's knocked himself before he's never been like this sad sad sad

Sorry to hear this matey; hope he heals quickly. Have you noticed that we worry far more about our dogs than we do ourselves? If it were you with pain I bet you would grin & bear it for the most part.

SBT must be the most difficult breed to keep quiet for a few days. Good luck.

that doesn't sound right. How is his hind leg? is he putting any weight on it yet.

Might be worth while taking him to the vets. Or sourcing a Physiotherapist as they often know more about muscle issues as they deal with them ona daily basis.

Get him some Rymadils - fantastic stuff! You can also do some hot and cold compresses on his knee to help soothe some of the pain.

if he has twisted his knee and he isnt already, i'd strongly suggest cage rest for the poor lad, will stop him aggravating it anymore at least.

sorry to say chick, but he does look in pain sad his back is tight, his stomach tucked up, even tension in his face... poor lad what advise has the vet given, whats the prognosis? why is he not being cage rested? did they not give him any pain killers?
i have a friend who is a Mctimoney Chiropractioner, basically a chiropracter for dogs, she's brilliant at what she does and often fixes things that vets cant, might be worth looking one up in your area Smile

Give him rest and metacam sad We don't have a crate anymore and he's at work with me. I'm not even sure it's just his knee to be honest sad

I'm adverse to the crate to be honest IMO. He was trained to use a crate but we got rid of it when he was around 4 months old. He spends all day with me and usually just in the office so it's pretty small and he sleeps a lot of the time.

Thanks for the concern.

I totally can vouch for the McTimoney Chiropractioner. I am waiting to hear back from one in my area for Charlie. They really do work wonders and as Vix said can often do more good than the vets

Only major difference I can find is that metacam is a slightly weaker oral soluition whereas the rimadyl are palatable chewable tablets, the weakness of the metacam isn't necessarily a consideration as the amount could be increased and the tablets decreased if your with me. Lola took 1 1/2 a day when she hurt herself of the rimadyl.

Do understand that you dont want to see him in a crate. BUT depending on the severity of his injury (it may not be that bad) but if it is then the reason for crating would be to stop ALL movement. If he's still ike this tomorrow would it be worth going back to your vets or at least give them a ring to see if his "behaviour" is to be expected and if so how long for?

((((hugs))) to Harley

thanks for that, so basically there's not really any point in metacam, just a larger quantity of a lower dosage drug?

From what I read yes, its like when my son was ill he could either take 4, 5ml spoons of childrens ibuprofen in one go or 1 adult ibuprofen tablet.

Its possible (probable lol) that the vets get certain drugs from certain manufacturers so my vet has never mentioned metacam its always been rimadyl, maybe Harleys vets don't use rimadyl, only metacam?

Right another funny thing. It's not just his back leg giving him problems, he licking like hell at his front paws too. He's restless, listless and frankly I'm worried about the tail thing.

He's had 4 little chicken wings before, he's been to the toilet okay though. I've given him Tropicana juice all day to increase his vitamin C level.

He's really in a worse state than China. He wasn't HALF as bad before he snuck out and played with Arnold last night. I'm taking him for a walk this evening when the OH gets in, not too far but he's desperate to be out.

Thanks Watts, that's really helpful, he's not a massive eater but he's certainly been off his grub today.

I'm adverse to the crate to be honest IMO. He was trained to use a crate but we got rid of it when he was around 4 months old. He spends all day with me and usually just in the office so it's pretty small and he sleeps a lot of the time.

Thanks for the concern.

Thanks Vix, I'm seriously considering taking him back tomorrow. His behaviour is way different to all other times he's hurt his legs/paws.

Im sorry to hear about your boy. Hope he feels better soon. Just be warned about rimadyl though. It is surrounded by controversy and there have been a lot of owners who have claimed their dogs have died becuase of taking this drug. It is said that it causes kidney failure. It certainly works for some dogs but not others so its worth looking into it before trying it. (as with any medication)

Thanks Watts.

I was meant order loads of stuff for work today but my head's been all over the shop with worry about Harley and it's not been done. To some people it sounds daft, to others they understand, they're the only ones I'd even consider listening to. Smile

It's horrible when they are ill or hurting, when Lola had cystitis I cried because she was crying in pain
