Training dogs to be calm around young children.

Post by stehol on Sat 07 Nov 2009, 11:12

Any advice or opinions appreciated, Bailey is generally pretty good but does get a little over excited now and again, the main thing is jumping up the kids,he doesnt nip but he will lick them to death if he isnt stopped,we have explained to the kids to just stand up and turn their back on him when he gets a bit ott.with josh our two year old, we catch him just before he starts licking or getting excited with a firm no and he is improving, but any tips appreciated cheers Oh and Bailey is only 5 months old btw..

It'll take a while still for him to contain himself. He is still only a baby himself and it sounds like he is doing fantastic already. Keep doing what you're doing but give him a verbal commnd along with the 'no' - no softly/calm/quiet etc... so he associates the word with the action. For some reason I used 'softly it's a baby' so now if I say anything is a baby they are very gentle and carefull around it.

I used gently with mine but to be fair I gave up and told them leave it when anyone came and they have been totally fantastic for a few weeks now they go to get up, look at me, I say leave it they lie back down.

I have the same problem with Gizmo. He knocked my mates 13 month old little boy over! The last few days EVERY time he has jumped up at someone i have put him outside. It is hard for him but i am going to be consistent because Vinnie has started doing it again now and that would be dangerous if it were a child!
I think by doing that ie excluding him for a minute and then saying leave (he knows leave) we will get there in the end.
Like you though - i would appreciate ANY advice as we live opposite a park and my worst fear is that he escapes and runs to the children. They really do love kids don't they!

If we are outside none of them bother with kids, it is only if they come around to the house.
My niece came around last weeend (she is 5) and I gave both of mine a piece of pizzle and they both got in their beds and were busy eating. By the time they had finished they had calmed down, however we did find that Reubens dark side came out and when she was walking into the kitchen with me he decided he would try and hump her sigh

I use the gently command with cassie and as already stated its just a matter of being consistent, with cassie its just excitement a seeing everyone, I also keep a frozen kong to use when visitors arrive, this keeps her busy for quite a time

im suffering from the same problem with harley who is also 5 months.

her excitment levels are through the roof, mainly when she is on a walk. she is so good when there is no1 around but as soon as she see's another person, dog anything she makes a desprate attempt to get to them. the trouble is she thinks to make friends she has to jump all over people and dogs.

trouble is i want her to get socialised by meeting people and dogs but as soon as they show her any attention thats it she is clambering all over them. ive tried to get her to sit, and wait and leave it but as soon as the excitment mist dessends it falls on deff ears.

any other little tricks i can try to prevent this.
