My poor dogs

Post by watts1974 on Thu 05 Nov 2009, 19:23

My next door but one neighbour is letting industrial type fireworks off in his garden, Dougal is a quivering wreck, Lola thinks its great Gracies in some sort of a trance and Vader had just gone outside for a wee when he let one off and he ran in here like all the hounds of hell were after him

Its very hard to ignore them when they are quite obviously distressed.

Don't really know, It just sort of started with come here you muppet when he was acting the fool...
Cos he is a total dipstick at times. I do wonder what I got saddled with when I bought him.
Wouldn't change him for the world though- definitely a character.

Oh...and he gets called worse than muppet some times

I have a very anxious labrador curled up by my feet...scared witless by the bangs! He's ok as long as he is laid next to someone, but trying to move him outside for a 'wee' is a bit of a pantomime! When the really loud ones go off he panics and tries to squeeze himself into the tightest corners he can find. Alfie (our young staff), so far, is not too bothered! He looks surprised when he hears the noise, but no signs of fear, thank goodness. Just hope he doesn't pick up on Jake's stress. Maisie, our lab bitch couldn't give a monkeys though. I think she must be more in tune with her gun dog heritage than what Jake is!

Buster didn't mind. In fact I played outside with him whilst they were going off in an effort to make a positive experience.

Millie, even with Diazipan from the vet was running around the house barking for hours; we tried to simply ignore her in the hope that she would realise there wasn't any danger, but she didn't let up.

Something needs to be done about this; fireworks, in the hands of the general public are just wrong!!

Don't get me started on fireworks!

I was in bed at 7pm last night as I was totally knackered from work - a few hours later a load of fireworks were going off and Dixie had literally crushed me when she dived on me.

They want banning from supermarkets, corner shops etc - I don't think people should be able to have fireworks in their gardens and they have one local(ish) display on fireworks night and that is it. There is no need for fireworks before or after...

It's not just pets that suffer - all the birds that die from heartattacks and fall out of trees - hedgehogs that make themselves a home in the bonfire before it is lit.

Re: My poor dogs

Post by watts1974 on Fri 06 Nov 2009, 09:55

Right well things went from bad to worse, Dougal is always a wreck and was glued to me, Gracie was shaking violently and was also with me. Vader cried to go outside and as at that point it was quite quiet I let him and Lola out, the fireworks they were letting off were proper display ones from Everalls which probably don't mean anything to you lot but car alarms were going off with the noise so you can imagine how bad it was.

So the dogs go outside Vader is having a wee, they let this massive firework off Vader goes apeshit and turns on Lola, Lola stands in shock as Vader goes at her, until the end of the firework flies into our garden - and hits Lola who then went back at Vader so on top of 2 dogs shaking and crying in the house we now have 2 dogs going hell for leather in the garden. Lola left it as soon as I shouted her, Stephen grabbed Vader and we hauled him into his cage, until he'd calmed down. Neither of them is hurt and both have been fine ever since (with each other) but this is ridiculous I am SO angry I cannot tell you, my lot have NEVER had a cross word or any incident before this and as others have said it looks likely to be going on until Sunday at least. Plus because we do live near Everalls and many people are employees/ex employees you can never guarantee when someone might let some of them off, so from now on I'm going to have to be extra vigilant.

I sympathise with you - Diesel is also a nervous wreck and I am dreading Saturday when no doubt more will go off.

I just sat with Diesel and gave him a nice shoulder rub - seemed to do the trick a little.

When Diesel was a pup it never bothered him but whilst we were o/side someone let a firework off and it's bothered him ever since.

I would like to see fireworks used at organised dispalys - our poor pets suffer so much it's not fair.

I feel sorry for the rabbits and guinea pigs that are o/side too sad

I agree Watts - I don't have any o/side pets but I would bring them in too Smile

I am also staying in Saturday night to make sure the boys are ok - was going for a meal but my pooches are more important xx

Lets do a rain dance - then no one can have fireworks lol

I've just been to the chemist and bought some rescue remedy spray that says it has immediate effect, come home squirted it in all the dogs mouths and they've all visibly relaxed pretty much immediately. £7.49 for the spray so fingers crossed that works.

Police and the council have said they had over 200 complaints about fireworks in our road last night so its not just me!

Aww Watts yr poor dogs. What a nightmare. I do agree that fireworks (especailly the massive ones) should be done on the outside of towns or where there are not to many residential homes. So that pets are not scared. Even thou Kai is our first dog.We have never let fireworks off in the garden. There is no need when there are so many big displays to go to. The kids used to have sparklers in the garden. But Every year there lots of reports of kids/teenagers & pets getting hurt. So maybe the problem of kids messing about with fireworks would also get better if there were only properly organised displays.
I hope all yr dogs are doing better this morning & hopefully it will rain so bad over weekend.people wont bother. lol

Tbh, I'm hoping it dosn't rain so that at least its over and donw with, if it rains all these numpty gimboids will have loads of fireworks hanging around and we'll never know when they will be going off at least this way I can be prepared!

All displays should be on the closest Saturday to the 5th and everything else banned - and they should only be on bonfire night!

Watts - that's an awful experience for the dogs and you, hope the rescue remedy does the trick when the fireworks kick off again. We're trying it this year been putting in the water over the last few days. Been quiet apart from a few so far but I know it will kick off tonight and tomorrow.
