devil dogs....not again.
im sorry if any one else has pointed this out. i haven been able to get online for the last week but.
just been to the shop and pick up the tv mag for the next week and was quickly flicking throug when i saw an advert for a program on thurs next week at 9:45 bbc2 called wonderland. it is a documentry about the high demand for staffs in london.
even readin the addvert has made me so mad. the women who has been breeding pups to make money cos they sell fast for £350 she actually says
"they may be small but there like little gladiators and they look frightening"
"im going to give one to my daughter for protection, id like to give the pup a nice macho name like bullet or taser"
i just know this programe is going to be a disgusting show of a few select bad people give our poor dogs there terrible name. what happened to having to give both sides of the argument and giving some of us ressponsible owners a chance to actualy show the contry how loving and wonderful staffs realy are.
the pic of the dogs in the mag dont even look like full staffs to me, they appear much bigger possibly with some sort of pit mix. (not that either breed nesicarly deserve there rep)
i feel so sad cos my beautiful baby who wouldn't hurt a fly and just loves every one is tarnished wiht the same brush by narrow minded tabloids/media.
im worried that one day i may not be able to have my breed of choice because of this bad press when they havent even gathered the true facts of what it is to be a real stafford owner, and how much effort we all make to ensure that our dogs are a fine example of there breed.
i want to make a complaint to the bbc and force them to give a good account of our dogs to.
sorry for the rant im upset.......god dame documentarys!!!!!

I think we should all complain to the BBC prior to it being aired.
It sounds disgusting and its one thing we could all do without on TV right now its bad enough without programmes like this being aired

Re: devil dogs....not again.
My friend rang me last night to tell me that this was going to be on, but she read it in a tv guide and she said that it was portraying staffs in a good light, there are more staffs in that area than anywhere else, that some of the teens were given staffs to prevent them being involved in crime, and that it was a good programme so I'm well confused now.

I think your friend might have been right, Watts.
I found this link on BBC's website
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00nts91
I think I will give it a look if I remember.
By the way, are there any theories as to why so many are abandoned?
Is it people buying them and not having any experience of dog ownership, or are there so many being bred that percentage wise we end up with so many abandoned.

Re: devil dogs....not again.
the advert ive seen doesnt seem to be that way.
"london has a high level of violent crime and one of the highest concentration of staffordshire bull terriers - dubbed devil dogs"
mind you the end of the advert there is a guy who says having his staff keeps him out of trouble because people will walk away from him.
im going to do some googling to see if i can find out more info

I'd say it's a bit of both, people getting them as cute puppies and then realising they are hard work, people not realising that it's expensive to keep a dog. The you've got people who want to look hard and realise the dogs a softy and then you'll have the even more irresponsible people who either try to breed their dogs to make quick cash and can't sell them, or don't have them nuteured or spayed and aren't careful and end up with unwanted puppies and just dump them.

The sky blurb says 7 pups for 7 owners, following how and where 7 pups are rehomed and the different lives they will lead.

Re: devil dogs....not again.
going back to the why so many staffs are abandoned thing. i think one of the reasons is that for puppies you can get them relitivley cheep. when i was reasarching pups befor i got harley i saw pups for sale for £125 £200 this is cheep for puppies considering when you look on the kc site there going for £500 - £1000
£200 is much easyer to part with than a grand. meaning there is a higher increase on impulse buys. then the reality of the highly energetic, strong teenager they grow into leads to people just getting rid of them like there an old pair of shoes. i know some one who is the local dog warden and she hates it when ever they get a staff purely for the reason she knows how hard they are to rehome.
lets keep our fingers crossed that this programe will show are doggies in a good light, then perhaps people will think twice when they go to the rehoming center and take on one of the many that needs a loving home.

Lol Taser or Bullet. Sounds pathetic not macho.
Good news doesn't make people watch programs or buy papers, I don't think anyone could take on the might of the BBC so we'll have to grin and bear it.
I found the most disgusting thing on 'My dog is a weapon' was the presenter's cousin had a blatant Pit Bull and nothing was done. Disgusting behaviour by the BBC.

You can grin and bear it, should it portray them in a bad light they will have the wrath of the S.O.I.N to deal with

Re: devil dogs....not again.
I thought the worst part of my dog is a weapon was the cctv footage of the four or five dogs fighting in the street with the two idiots thinking they could separate the dogs by kicking and punching them. One of the poor dogs seemed to have all the other dogs on it, it must've suffered appalling injuries. The dogs they were beating must've been badly injured too. Makes me so angry how these dogs are mistreated and abused. It's no wonder that one day they can potentially flip and attack an adult, a child or another dog.
I'll watch this programme though with interest

about the sale of staffies,I moved here 3 yrs ago from the othere side of the country, staffies were so popular there that every chav was breeding them, you could pick up a staffie for fifty pounds,by the time i left there they were finding them drowned in bags in the river,it wasnt a big town and this should never have been allowed to happen, makes me so sad, betty

I just went to the link above and then clicked on another link and found some peoples comments, one lady's comment made me really angry, i cant believe the narrow minds of some people, do not read if u dont wanna get angry!!
If im not allowed to copy from another website and paste here then please delete my comment.
"My miniature schnauzer was attacked by one of your highly immortalised 'staffies' last friday. Totally unprovoked and like a bolt of lightening it grabbed his face - obviously going for his nose, as did its ancestors when killing bulls during bear baiting. This innate very aggressive tendency is in ALL 'staffies' without exception. They are lethal near other dogs. They are an ugly powerful muscle with a massive crushingly powerful mouth. There are only certain types of people who have them - for this very reason, ie; thick thugs, drug dealers, and half-wits with penile or personality problems (trying to compensate by having an ugly dangerous 'dog'). People are now mixing this breed - 'staffie' - with dobermans. What does that tell us? These abominations should be banned. And that includes the dogs."
