Whats the best way of putting on weight?

Post by StaffyGo on Tue May 13, 2008 8:14 am

Hello everyone, greeting from Fruji Fancy and I!!
I have had my male Fruji boy for almost 11 months now,but I always think to myself and done some research that his size is a bit too small for his age.Hes eating quite well, and I have been to the vet enough times that, and been told he is really healthy straight face .
Would anyone please tell me whats the best way to put weight on him, most likely what sort of food that is reconmended apartfrom dog food whew!
PS I do take them out everyday to make sure they have enough excise.

Hi Esther,I dont know about now,but 3 weeks ago was weighted at 17 something,i cant remember clearly.
Some of my mates are say its not really good to feed dog food all the time,as they will get bored and not eating well even there are different flavours and brands.I met couple of staffie owners in the park, and i can clearly tell Fruji is not as wide or big as the others (his mum and dad are pretty big tho). I love my babies and always wish to give them the best treat,so any helpfull suggestions? Thanks alot for your quick replying anyway, respect! :-bd

I really dont think you have anything to worry about. If he is only 6 months old and weighs 17kg then to me that sounds fine. Apparantly staffies grown until they're about 2 years old so he still has plenty of growing to do.
As for his food, i dont think dogs can get bored of food. If he is enjoying the food that you're giving him and he is eating well then why change it? As long as you're buying really good quality dog food i dont see the need to keep changing it. Im pretty sure its not good to regularly change your dogs diet anyway...dont think it would be too good on their stomachs.

Here are two links to a staffy weight guide and people discussing the weight of their staffis at certain ages...you might want to have a read through it.

At 11 months old he will still have some developing to do, most dogs don't muscle up and fill out until much older. I am sure as he matures he will muscle up and fill out.

Dont think you got anything to worry about, 17kg at 11 months sounds normal to me. some staff's are big, some are small and i dont think feeding more is gonna make them "bigger" just fatter. Enzo is only on 1 meal a day when he should really be having 2 meals a day and hes only 11 months and weighs 21kg so it shows feeding them larger amounts isnt gonna make them grow bigger but just fatter tongue

yea at around a year old they should get about 2 hours walk a day (not in 1 go, say 2 walks for an hour each or 3 walks for 40 mins each).

no not unless your gonna take the meat off the bone. NEVER give a dog chicken bones, they can splinter their throat and kill them or get stuck in their ass which i imagine is quite painful.

You can feed him chicken necks and chicken frames!! But NEVER feed them drumsticks as Jay said it could be very harmful to your dogs!!

Jay you said that at a year old they should be walked for about 2 hours a day...i just wanna know why so long? Like im sure it wouldnt be bad, but if you didnt do that, i dont think it would be the end of the world?

Because my boyfriend and i both work full time and dont come home till its dark outside, it makes it quiet impossible to walk for that long around the streets in the dark and cold....and im sure we're not the only ones in that situation. Isn't just taking him for a good walk enough? As long as the dog isn't overweight or lazy then whats the problem?

I think Jay means not more than 2 hour`s cos of the age if you`re dog get`s older you can walk him longer .
I walk Duke longer cos i live in a very small home and during the day i have all the time in the world (i work at night) i go for a walk to the beach every day and let them play thats the big walk the small walks are for 45 min`s one in the morning and one around noon and in the evening Sandra goes out for a walk with them .
When they are older around 15 months i will go on the bicycle and try to get them in the best shape possible (if they like it ) .

a staffy in prime condition should weigh around the 17kg mark.

muscle weighs more than fat, so a fit dog will not only look better than a fat dog....it will probably weigh the same.

if you feed & exercise you dog properly it's weight & condition will take care of its self.
