Re: cropped ears
im i right in thinking, that geting your dogs ears cropt, back in yester year times were associated with dog fighting...
as it made the ears less to be biting off or damaged......
not sure but i might be right,or not....

I kind of have mixed feeling about cropping ears.
First I would never crop any of my dogs ears, I think it’s cruel and just plain not right.
But for others it’s their preference and choice, I do kind of understand. I think it’s hypocritical to say it’s not ok to crop ears and tail …….. but it’s ok to neuter/fix Dogs. If I was dog I wouldn’t mind too much my ears being cut, but to have my nuts cut off….I would have serious problems!! lol
Turbo will have his ears, tail, and nuts all his puppy/dog years!!
I understand that it is all personal preference, but i never understand how people can discuss castration and neutering in the same way as docking and ear cropping. Docking and ear cropping can never have benificial affects on the dogs behaviour or stop unwanted puppies, pyometra or cancer!
Castration, neutering, docking and ear cropping are all painful!! Period point blank!
Castration, neutering is not beneficial to the Dog, its beneficial to the owner. Behavior and unwanted puppies can be controled without Castration or neutering of the Dog.
I can get prostrate Cancer too, but I’m not going cut my nuts off!!! lol (I’m just being sarcastic!! lol)
Re: cropped ears
I have been told that any form of docking is illegal unless it is perfomed on a 'working dog'. Up here in Northumberland we see a lot of working dogs - fair enough. What I don't like is that these working dogs are not allowed off the leash to socialise, and if your dog goes over to sniff them the owners are not happy. You can see that most of these dogs are dying to play.

not so.
my old guy had a growth on the testicles & ii was a case of the chop or die.
needless to say it was chop.
dog aggression is greatly diminished by castration. sometimes castration is the only alternative to save a life.
castration is done under full anaesthetic. there is no pain attached. my boy has not skipped a beat. life as usual.
as a matter of fact i believe only registered pure breed breeding stock should be left entire. that would significantly reduce the numbers of the millions of unwanted pets put to the sword every year worldwide.
i am pro taildocking. done by qualified people to the traditionally docked breeds.
ears should left au naturale.

Well of course you did the right thing smooth, by getting your old boy done, cause that was for health reasons and rightly so, i would have done the same without hesitation
I never got my old boy done nor studded him and never had any problems with him, so i suppose it depends on indivisual cases.
I also agree with castration for aggression issues as a last resort. And for the rescues for stopping lots of unwanted pups, which i agree there are far too many
But are we not supposed to live in a free society? To say only pure breds KC can breed is a dictatorship of hypocrisy in itself. We choose to own/breed our chosen breed(staffys) and attain its purity, thats our own ideals, and we are well within our rights to do so.
But no one else is allowed to breed because WE dont like the outcome?
Thank god they did'nt think that way back then or we would'nt have our wonderfull Staffys today

''back then'' was whole different world.
for one, there wasn't a couple of hundred thousand dogs & cats being put down every year because nobody wanted them.
altho if they had an unwanted litter then, they just put them in a sugar bag & chucked 'em in the river.
what purpose does putting one mongrel over another serve other than fuel the cremation fires at the rspca shelter?
we need to face the problems of now, not live in the past.

That depends on a lot of things, first the dog has a responsible owner who will make sure that their dog doesn't cause any problems. I remember when we just moved into this house, we had just got a bitch who came into season the day we moved, I looked out of the window and counted 14 dogs outside, that was all I could see, there could have been more. Getting my children out of the house to take them to school was a nightmare.
When I took Joe on at 10 months old he was humping everything he could, he was really stressed and miserable, I had him neutered and he changed over night into a much more relaxed dog. He still tries to hump his sister Gracie though and it is 11 years since he was done.
You can talk, you can say if you have a problem, a dog can't, by the time most owners notice something is wrong the dog is too far gone.
We pts very ill dogs that we can't heal to stop them being in pain, we can't to a human, I watched my mother die of gangrene and have lost close friends to cancer, all suffered for a long time and we would never allow an animal to suffer like that.

Yes the worlds population has has grown rapidly, hence more people more pets
And in the throw away society we live in today , pups/dogs are still killed this way (thrown in the cut)
No-one is living in the past, the problems are all too obvious, pedigree dogs are also PTS too, but do not the pedigree breeders also have a responsibility by NOT adding to the ever growing problem also? Probably more so, as many have several bitches and several litters a year , year in year out
My thinking is what makes them any different from the BYBs?

Re: cropped ears
of course there are ''byb's'' breeding only pure breeds. no denying it.
that's the reason why i say buy from an ethical breeder/exhibitor. the key words being ethical & exhibitor. anyone who is proud enough of their stock to show them to the world is a good place to start.
the next step is to visit their kennels. if they don't want to show their kennels give them a miss.
if you are unsure of the ethical bit do a little research, attend dog shows & chat to the exhibitors.
if a reg pure breed is beyond your budget, save a life & get a dog from the pound. if it works there the same as here, the dog of your choice will come with a complete health check, all vacc's & be desexed. make a withdrawal instead of a deposit.
however the manditory desexing of all pets is still the best & easiest way to reduce the carnage that exists in our ''shelters'' today. regardless if they are pure breeds or not. pets are pets regardless of breeding.
looking to the future, i can see the day when the owners & not the dog will have to be licensed. which wouldn't be all bad when you really think about it.

I was talking about some top show kennels that exhibit/ health test
I totally agree with that
They have that in place in parts of Europe allready- owners/breeders
but i also think a cap should be enforced as to how many litters breeders are allowed to produce in any given year
and the amount of litters a bitch may poduce in a lifetime to say only two ( probably get jumped on for that!) lol

Re: cropped ears
the ankc has a code of ethics for members/breeders.
among a host of things is if a bitch has litters too close together or is too young, especially the large/giant breeds, a please explain is sent & the if the answer is not satisfactory the litters wont be registered &/or the breeder may be suspended or deregistered.
there are always the lurk merchants who will try ever wrinkle no matter what the caper, but at least this a step in right direction for the pure breed doggy world..
& there is also moves afoot to legislate against the sale of live animals in pet shops. this is to try & block the outlets for the puppy farmers.
we already have manditory micro chipping. it is an offence to sell a dog that is not chipped.

Re: cropped ears
Here the Kennel Club rules are -
No litters can be registered if the bitch is under 12mths old
Or the bitch has allready whelped 6 litters
Or the bitch has reached 8 yrs of age
Also breeders, breeding 5 or more litters a year need to be licensed
Or less than 5 litters a year, if the Local Authority deem it is for commercial gain
Here microchipping is not mandatory, but i think it should be,
But our law regarding selling dogs/cats/livestock etc in pet shops has been banned for some years now
So i hope the ban comes through over there too

that's good.
i think 6 litters is generous tho. but that seems to be tied to the 8 years old limit. which is really too old.
unfortunately, as is the case everywhere, laws/rules are really only for the honest/caring people.

In my opinion there are only 2 reasons to want to crop a dogs ears
1. so your dog looks hard. which is pathetic
2. you intend to fight the dog . which is disguting and against the law.

I don't know about Ireland, as Rotties can still have their tails docked their. But over here, tail docking and ear cropping is illegal...thank god.

I thought Tail cropping was still allowed in the uk for some breeds but only if it is performed by a vet and you have a cert to prove it.

some breeds (& some breeds thats illigal UK) save blood becouse their owner crop their ears.
BUT I not saying this is necessary to dogs breed in south/north europe.
