hi i am new here and would like some advice.

we have just rehomed 2 2year old staffy bitches from a rescue centre, they are super in every way apart from when we take them out for a walk one starts screaming (as only a staffy can) when she shes another dog and also pulls like hell, this then starts the other one off.

can anyone give me a training regeme to follow as we really want to sort this, so that instead of dreding taking them for their walks we can enjoy them

thanks

I was shocked apart from a couple of days not eating so quick last week - ( teething) she loves her food and is a bit greedy. Changed the food into her own bowl and she dived in and hoovered the lot...I think we are getting there at last!!

Morning All.

I have noticed pretty much since Sookie was a pup she can be a little snappy with other dogs if they get in her face, on the lead or off the lead.

She did it this morning with a collie x who was getting in her face yapping at her. She lunged at him but once had snapped and warned him off she ignored him.

I have also had a similar problem with a greyhound that runs right up to her, runs off then comes back right up to her again and repeats the process till Sookie ...

So far all Toby will do is 'sit' basically. i'v been trying to teach him 'down' and 'stay' but hes seems to get over excited about the treats instead of listening to what i'm asking him to do. to the point hes just jumping up at me to get the treat.

Also i'v been doing the moving the treat down to the floor to get him to naturally drop 9into a down) but he sort of gets up and just crouches

any ideas where i'm going wrong or wot i can do to improve?

Every time we see a dog,he just goes absolutely mad.He barks loudly and it takes all of my considerable strength to control him on his harness and lead.

He looks really aggressive when he does this, but his tail is wagging all the time.

Secondly, when any body passes us in the street he barks ...

Firstly this post is not intended to offend or dig at anyone...

Why do so many Staffy owners choose a harness rather than a collar? As far as I can see a harness enables the dogs weight to be evenly distributed, therefore making it much easier for them to pull, Huskies and tracking dogs wear them so that it doesn't inhibit their movements and allows them to use their WHOLE body. Mine wear them for flyball as they get VERY excited (even Honey) and it allows for them to go nuts whilst preventing ...

Is recall something that gets better as the dog gets older? Reuben is the youngest dog I have owned and the only one where I am strugging with recall.

I can take him out and let him off on the fields which I do regularly but have to be on guard for any other dog coming into the field. He is not bothered by people in the slightest and has no interest if someone walks by.

When he is off lead he will come back as soon as I tell him, however should another dog come onto the field I know for ...

How do you assert your pack leadership status? Do you always walk through doors, stairs etc first before your dog? When on walks do you make your dog heel to your side and not do anything but walk?

I was reading this article - http://dogbreedinfo.com/topdogrules.htm (please remove if you feel this should not be linked)

I am know not sure what i should be doing as i am not all that fussed about walking through door ways first or eating first, should i be?

It also says not to lay or ...

I have been using a gentle leader on Reuben for the last couple of weeks along with a secondary lead on his harness. I have been told that I should use both leads at all times, does anyone know if this is correct?

I am still using both as he still tries to rub the leader off at every bush he finds so for now it is extra security should he get it off, however once he is used to the leader should I continue with both?

Right after watching that sad film about Sam. It got me thinking how calm and lovely he was! He looked so lovely and calm and gorgeous!
Why is it patch wont sit still and let me just stroke him without him trying to nip me. Unless he is tired then i can sit all night stroking him lol. Will he calm down with the nipping as he gets older? Am i wanting too much too soon? lol

Hi

He is the best dog around people and young children but as soon as he sees another dog its all on! i try to make him sit and wait! this is very embarassing!

He doesnt even wait to have a sniff he just trys to bit the snout of the poor oncoming dog!

Cheeko was raised with another SBT that was already 2 years old and they got along fine!

Dogs learn using operant conditioning or consequence learning, this means that they learn what they do has a consequence, it is your job to make sure the consequence is a positive reward for good behaviour. There is no need to be a bully or a dictator to have a well behaved dog.

Find an area with no distractions to train, and keep the sessions short at first.

Decide if you will reward with treats, which should be small enough to eat immediately, and the appropriate calorific value removed ...

This isn't the nicest way to resolve a problem but we have two pupsters who seem keen to meet the Staffies in Australia they constantly dig holes that they can disappear into.

he collected a couple of their own healthy fresh poos from the garden and placed them ever so nicely in the holes they had dug and then buried them.

Next time out they went scuttling back like little ...

I took Lulu to the vets today (5 days after her spay) and she was her usual over-friendly self with the people in the waiting room. When we came out from seeing the vet there was a lady sitting down and she turned really aggressive towards her, barking and growling like I have never ever heard her do before. She was pulling me so hard and luckily the woman was called into the vet and she then calmed down. I was so embarrassed, she looked like a stereotypical staff who should have a muzzle! ...
