what is an amstaf?

Post by ldmarston86 on Tue 25 Nov 2008, 20:57

I'm confused! from what iv'e been told is American Staffordshires are a cross of Pit and American Bulldog. Well, I've been reading a lot about training and a lot of things i've read say that American Staffordshire Terrier is just another name for a pit bull. Is this true. It's not gonna affect Hemi's life in any way. He's my Big Man and always will be no matter what but i'd kinda like to know so I don't look like an idiot one day talking to someone who knows the difference. Has the American staffordshire just been lumped in with the pit breed because they look similar or are they the same thing?

he could be called a pitbul type, here a link to a standard pitbull
http://www.apbtconformation.com/head.htm

most pitbull today are not a true pit

over here your dog doesn't need to have pit in him to be classed as a pitbull type you could have a stafffie X lab & if he look abit like a pit he will be classed has a pit type. that how messed up the uk dogs laws are.

That's a great chart!! From what I've read, when people moved to America they brought with them the staffordshire bull terrier. From there, they bred the dog to be more useful on farms and such making the dog leaner and taller. The american pitbull was born. However, the AKC would not recognize this breed because of it's fighting background. Due to this, the breed of the dog was changed to the american staffordshire terrier for those that wanted to show the dog. Since then, the two dogs have split into separate breeds, though they share many similarities (as do most bully breeds). The american pitbull today is such a vast breed. There is the terrier type, the bully type, and so on. So many breeders in America have ruined this breed, for example: http://www.bullygang.com/ , and http://www.bluepits.ws/page1.html. Even the name of these breeders upsets the heck out of me! XXL pitbulls... WHAT IS THAT?!?! Half of these dogs can barely walk right there is so much muscle. Anyways, before I start ranting, I did a lot of research on the history of all these breeds before I picked the staffordshire bull terrier and the majority of the information I researched agreed with this theory. Hope this is informative!

Hemi isn't froma breeder. we got him from the shelter when he was 4.5 months so that is why there is the confusino on his breed. had a vet look at him and he's defo pit/american bulldag. The vet said that his mix is a true american staffy but that showing pits are sometimes called that too. apparently there are 2 different lines of pit, fighting and showing. the fighting line tends to be the shorter stocky ones and the showing line is the taller one. American staffies are cousins to pits but not truely the same thing. foudn a book on american staffies too an it said the same thing.
