25 metre lines?
Anyone know where you can get those 25 metre lines for dogs from? Enzo is starting to turn a bit nasty with other dogs now so i dont wanna let him off his lead in busy places anymore but at the same time i want him to get a good run around. I had him off lead over the park today and this labrador ran over and growled at him, he sniffed it and realised it was male then just went mad and attacked it and pinned it down by its neck. Luckily he hadnt gone too out of control and stopped as soon as i shouted at him. The owner of the Lab seemed like a cool guy and said not to worry about it as it was as much his fault as mine for also having his dog off lead but i dont want this happening again so i need to invest in 1 of these lines really, so if you know where i can get 1 from, let me know.
And before anyone says try the pet shop, i have and it dont sell them

Re: 25 metre lines?
hi, i don't know but if you find out can you let me know please.
i use a lunge rein (used for horses) but they only go up to 30ft aprrox 9m, but can pick them up off ebay for about £4 - 5
I bought an extendable long lead but it wass too flimsy for my staffies, broke it after using it twice.

He was attacked by 2 rottweilers (on 2 different occasions) when he was only 4 - 6 months old so he gets really funny whenever he goes near big male dogs now. Hes fine with anything else and will do what i ask of him so i dont think its a control problem, he just gets nervous around big dogs and then suddenly in that situation, nothing i say matters anymore, he jsut wants wants to attack them

I dont really know what i can do to make him forget about being attacked when he was a pup so i just get the feeling its better if i keep him on lead all the time rather than having him rip someone elses dog to shreds

Although there is 1 thing, luckily both times he was attacked we had my girlfriends dads GSD x Mastiff with us and she protected him and fought the rottie off on both occasions so whenever we have her with us now he is fine around big male dogs, its like he feels safe around her because she protected him.
If you can think of any ideas to help him get over it, please let me know

Re: 25 metre lines?
Jay,
What did you do when he got attacked did you neuter his behaviour or did you just move on becasue cesar Millan has said that if you nueter there behavior theyll just keep doing it.

Sorry I missed this, it is possible to change your dog's behaviour but it will take quite some time and management to do it. I done it with Gracie who wanted to kill every dog she saw when I first got her.
Each time Enzo reacts to another dog he is getting very stressed, when stressed most of his brain closed down apart from the fight or flight part, this is for his protection and is why he attacks other dogs. To stop him reacting you have to keep him far enough from other dogs so he doesn't react. With Gracie it was about a quarter of a mile away at first but gradually this distance got less and less.
I also taught Gracie to "Watch Me", so when I saw another dog I would take her into a field or up someone's drive, get her to sit, and "Watch Me" until they were past. If I couldn't get her into a field or up a drive I would turn and walk the other way until I could. If she reacted, she was too close to the other dog and I would make sure she had more room next time.
I also had to put up with stupid idiots who thought my 10in high dog wanted to kill their GSD or Boxer and would deliberately bring their dog up to Gracie to see her react, they only done it once, I was more aggressive with my tongue than Gracie was.
Gradually Gracie needed less and less room and now she is really good with other dogs, she greets them nicely in the way well mannered dogs do, and all that aggression has gone. Well worth the time and effort that it took.
I hope you can work Enzo through this and yes, you are being a good dad to Enzo by making sure he can't attack other dogs by having him on a long line, he can still run and play on one.

Thank you Mattie, very good read, I'll have to try this out. Only problem with him is that he doesnt show any warning or any signs that hes getting angry or about to attack. If a big male dog comes near him he sniffs it, realises its a male and then goes for it without warning, no bark, no growl, nothing. Its like hes got it in his mind that all big male dogs are gonna attack him so he has to make the first move to protect himself.
I know what you mean about stupid people too, i would of thought it would be obvious that if ive got Carley running around freely off lead and then Enzo on a 10 metre line then it means Enzo doesnt like male dogs but some silly people still let their dogs run right up to him. Seen hes had this line though i havent had any problems, i think he feels safer on it or something.

Gracie didn't show any signs either, she just went but you have to take charge before he goes by not letting him go to other dogs, if he doesn't go to them he can't attack them. The more you keep him in his safety zone, were he doesn't react, they quicker he will realise that other dogs are not frightening.
Seeing a dog on long lead other owners don't know why, they could think you are training him and not stopping him from attacking their dogs. It is up to you to keep Enzo safe although that is very difficult at times. When you see another dog, get him back to you as quickly as you can, preferably before he sees it.
Re: 25 metre lines?
my sam ears goes back and his hair stand up on his back when he see a big dog, that when i pull him back
Re: 25 metre lines?
Ears back and he makes himself big (stretches his neck, chest up), tail in the air.

Steve wrote:my sam ears goes back and his hair stand up on his back when he see a big dog, that when i pull him back
That is too late, he is already reacting, he needs to be taken back before he reacts that way he learns not to react.
Re: 25 metre lines?
i have try most way with him turn around and walk the other way telling him to sit nothing really work with him when i see a dog comming i just pull him back and just walk pass them with a short lead, he got attack by 2 boxer when he was 7 months old it must of proper stock in his head, he dont try to fight every dog he just dont like boxer, rottie, anything that alot bigger than him,
longest lead in the world
Go to hardware store...buy length of rope and a snap or carabiner...attach snap or carabiner to rope...take dog for short walk on long rope.. make adjustments if needs be knot the rope in sections for grip.
